STORY
Donald is a construction worker with a problem – his wife. She’s not a good cook but thinks she is, and she just can’t get enough of experimenting with her new industrial-sized microwave. Tired of being mocked at work and of not being able to eat “real” food, he kills her during an argument. However, after absent-mindedly chewing on one of her legs, Donald develops a taste for human flesh and starts doing whatever is takes to keep his fridge stocked…
OPINION
“The Worst Horror Movie Of All Time!”? Not by a long shot, but I can see where they’re coming from. In many ways, Microwave Massacre reminded me of the work of Herschell Gordon Lewis, especially films like Color Me Blood Red and The Gruesome Twosome. I’ve never gotten on well with Lewis’ movies, mainly because the direction and script are so flat that they usually bury the (often very interesting) concepts under a thick layer of boredom. Microwave Massacre is never within range of actually being a good film, but I was much more entertained by it than any of Lewis’ movies.
Part of this has to do with the slightly spoofy tone, with a number of funny gags – often involving nudity – that help keep up interest. While the acting is uniformly terrible, Vernon is at least quite likeable (again, a contrast to the stuffed suits that act as Lewis’ heroes”), and the bad special effects are at least quite amusing – you get the feeling that the director knew how bad they were so decided to poke a little fun at them.
I’ve already reviewed worse films than this – I’d certainly rather watch this again than the boring Creature and Alien Terror – so it’s passably entertaining if never exactly a roller-coaster ride of fun.
