STORY

Jamie is a troubled but bright young boy who has problems getting along with people both his own age and older. Bullied and tormented, he seems to have retreated into his own fantasy world, which makes things harder for the new live-in babysitter. While she tries to bring him out of his shell, he’s developed something of a crush on her. Not good when it’s inevitably not going to work out, especially when he seems to have a bizarre connection with an old stuffed toy and something living in a pit in the woods…

OPINION

This is an interesting but ultimately highly flawed character piece. Most of the focus is on the young boy and his babysitter, but the kid is truly unsympathetic and without the demonic appeal of, say, Damien in The Omen 2 or the titular character in the sorely underrated recent movie Joshua. I felt that this was a fatal flaw as I don’t think we’re meant to be rooting for his inevitable demise towards the end of the film! It’s also a very slow moving film, which lapses into boredom.

It’s also quite disjointed. I’m not sure if it’s just the copy I was watching or the film itself, but the editing seem to jump around in places and there’s a few jumps around in time that didn’t seem to make narrative sense. There’s some aspect of the movie that don’t make a lot of sense (why don’t the police get involved after he essentially sexually abuses a woman?), while there’s a few shifts in tone between comical and creepy that don’t sit right. However, the film does pick up a little towards the last half hour, when a major character is offed and the creatures get out of the pit. The effects are passable but rather cheesy and there’s not a lot of gore

Overall, a passable time filler, but I don’t think it’s a movie I’m going to remember much about in the next few weeks…

Rating: ★★☆☆☆
